One of the main alchemical operations employed a flat evaporating pan to steam off excess wetness so that a dry remainder could be used for further concoctions. Too much liquid and the soul substance tends to putrefy. You feel yourself swamped, flooded; can’t get out of this mood; stagnating. Dissolved in grief, in yearning, in messy, sticky situations. Evaporation lets off the steam, boils away the moisture that has kept you stuck. Old glue dries to dust; you no longer adhere to former allegiances. Once the emotion is extracted from a memory, it can pass in review as an interesting curiosity. All the turbulence has evaporated, leaving bare bones, a dried essence, much like a chemical residue cleansed of extraneous matter. The reduction of the past to dry facts yields the salt of wisdom that the old are supposedly able to dispense. They only achieve these salty and bitterly true insights after their own emotional involvement has dried up.
