Dionysos, Lord of Souls, the divided god who was pulled into pieces. Dionysos embodies the force of life, zoe (from which our “zoology”), which runs alike through all humans, animals, and plants. “Our body is Dionysian,” declared the ancient writer Olympiodoros. This strange figure, even named “the stranger,” was most male and most effeminate, a little child and a bearded man, wild and somber, masked and revealed, aroused and recumbent. Despite his awesome power and passion, he is usually in the company of nurses. Of all his paradoxes, perhaps the sharpest is this: This intoxicating life force, who came on the scene together with a dancing gang of prancing satyrs and raving devotees, was also declared to be one and the same as Hades, invisible god of the souls in the underworld.
Hillman, James.
