As we rushed across the monotonously empty, red Martian desert, roadside markers became our only reference points in space and time: fierce concrete dinosaurs, looming cacti, hand-painted billboard ads for meteorites, Indian jewellery, petrified tree stumps and scorpion paperweights. Roadside shrines – moments of high-speed tragedy preserved in the dry heat of eternity – littered the hard shoulders, marked by white crosses, plastic flowers and weather-worn cuddly toys, all arranged neatly alongside the ripped metal and shredded rubber remains of their vehicles.
Pilkington, Mark.
