Folklorists have a word for the process whereby folktales bleed into reality; they call it ‘ostension’. But when these tales are given a kick start by the intelligence agencies, I think we can simply call it deception. Looking back at the UFO’s first decade, it’s clear to see that the military and civilian intelligence agencies acted as midwives in the birthing of the UFO myth. There are signs of intelligence ‘dirty tricks’ at work in the Maury Island case and, if we believe Silas Newton’s diaries, then at least one intelligence agency was complicit with the seeding of the crashed UFO and occupant stories surrounding Aztec. It was a pattern that would be repeated over and over again in the coming decades, and UFOs were just one of the tools that the intelligence tricksters used to do their dirty work.
