Simon Parkes’s story exceeded even the wildest accounts I had read in the books of Hopkins, Mack and other alien abduction specialists. Simon was born in 1960 in Brighton and was raised single-handedly by his mother. At the age of eighteen, he moved to London and became a councillor in Hackney. In 1998 he relocated to North Yorkshire and was elected to represent the Labour party as a ward councillor in the seaside town of Whitby. This is the town where I was married and I knew every inch of its coastline from childhood holidays. It was associated in my mind with long summer afternoons on the beach and fish and chips. But Whitby also has a lingering reputation for the supernatural. It was one of the locations that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula and thousands of pilgrims flock there each year to experience the mystique of the medieval abbey where, in the novel, the Count comes ashore seeking human blood. Now Whitby had Simon Parkes with his tales of aliens that harvested human souls.
