There are many puzzles about the adulation that Perls received. He is best known for his insistence on the primacy of feelings and his eagerness to denounce those for whom feelings did not matter or whose feelings he felt were not genuine. Yet he could demonstrate an almost unfathomable lack of feeling for those who had been part of his own family. In his autobiography he mentions his eldest sister, Else, only once, and coldly: “She was a clinger…she also had severe eye trouble…when I heard of her death in a concentration camp I did not mourn much.”
