Suddenly they were in a hall of distorting mirrors where once innocuous events loomed large and mishaps were transformed into disasters. It was not all in their mind, though; they were sure of that. They felt victimized, but their adversary was not apparent. That added an unreal aspect to their existence, as if things were being shifted behind the scenery of their lives and they only saw the results days later. It became a case of if something could go wrong, it would go wrong; so many problems, failures, disappointments, that they started to see an intelligence behind the random bad luck. That was a dangerous path, they knew, but they couldn’t help their gut response. Who’s out to get us? they joked. And what have we ever done to harm anybody? But the downward spiral continued, nevertheless.
Chadbourn, Mark.
