AIR IS THE medium in which light and darkness move. Light makes the air brighter and transparent. Darkness comes and fills the air with blackness. Air is the most hospitable of the four elements. The earth is strong and full of substance. Yet it resists letting things into it. Water lets things in and still remains itself. Fire lets things come into it, but it reduces them to cinders. But Air lets things fully in and will not in any way damage them. The generosity of air allows each object to emerge and to be. Air gives space. Without space individu ality would be impossible. Form is the secret of individuality. And form is a line cut into space. In this sense air is the secret mother of individuality.
