Transformative experiences, then, confront you with the basic unknowability of your subjective future in a context where new and dramatic changes are occurring, and transformative decision-making draws out the consequences of that epistemic fact. In an important sense, when facing a transformative choice, you lack the knowledge you need in order to have authority and control over who you will become when you choose how to act. You can’t navigate these decisions by stepping back, rationally evaluating your different subjective possibilities, and then choosing the act that maximizes the expected subjective values of your future lived experience. That is, when faced with such choices, you can’t clear-sightedly map your possible futures out and first-personally assess them to guide your life course, rationally evolving your perspective forward and updating as you go. Instead, you grope forward in deep subjective ignorance of what your future conscious life will be like.
