Now I understood why Father Paul’s retirement home lay in the shadow of the mystical Isle of Avalon. Glastonbury is well known as the epicentre of all things alternative and strange in Britain. Father Paul compared the small Somerset town with ‘a psychic telephone exchange’. Much of his adult life had been dedicated to battling religious heresies and even in his final years he was still at the front line. But at this precise moment there were more pressing priorities. ‘I think it’s time for my lunchtime beer and cheese,’ he announced. Anna emerged from the kitchen with a tray of sandwiches and a pot of tea. As he poured his beer and cut his cheese, Father Paul grumbled about the presence of witches and goddess-worshipping pagans who had made the area their home.
