Among all the stars and their constellations, a few stand out as being of more importance. We have already mentioned the circumpolar stars and in particular the constellation known as the Great Bear or Ursa Major, known to the Mesopotamians as the Great Wagon or MAR.GID.DA. This is a concept that is shared by so many peoples around the world as to be virtually universal, the difference being those who refer to the same constellation as the Bear or arktos, a term that is suggestive of other meanings, other resonances as we will see later. The ancient Greeks also referred to Ursa Major as amaxa, or “chariot,” a name they borrowed from the Babylonians, who actually broke down the constellation into the constituent parts of a chariot including “the yoke, the pole, and the side pieces” which are “equated with divine beings.”
