I’d wandered into CAMHSville town. I was standing in WH Smith book section. Like some type of homing pigeon I opened my eyes and found myself holding a copy of Sort Your Life Out in Half an Hour: The Counselling Coaching Handbook of the Year. Anyway, to cut a potentially long and boring story down the Counselling Industry has embraced the new postmodern era of: ‘I need to be fixed by the end of the weekend and I want to do it all on my own for the price of a paperback’. Like some novelty house regeneration programme the whole world is becoming therapy savvy. The images and objects of counselling have always been fascinating to the uninitiated. If I have a £ for every time someone has said: ‘I bet you can read my mind can’t you?’ I’d have no need to read cheap paperbacks about counselling. My point here is not a critique of ‘do it yourself demystified counselling’. In fact, I applaud the idea of empowerment and ‘people doing it for themselves’. My point is that we have become a generation who just love to consume what I term: therapy porn.
Holyoake, Dean-David.
