Without knowing why, the other four drew close to her. Her brow was dewed with sweat and she clutched at the torc as if it had suddenly become too small for her. Above the little bowl of flower-tufted gravel was a cloudless sky; but the air seemed to be thickening into a liquid in which uncanny transparent whorls and streamings formed and reformed faster than the eye could follow. It became impossible to see clearly beyond the encircling rocks. The upper slopes of the mountain shimmered and flowed and broke into fluid masses of constantly changing shape. The black knoll, on the other hand, assumed a pristine clarity. It was obviously the center of whatever activity was pending.
