We strut about for our hour in the sun as if we are free and independent of that great reality we once called Mother and Father but now can understand only through distant, disembodied terms like planetary ecosystem. But we are not free of it. We are not independent. Everything is connected. The living go on living from one moment to the next . . . only because of the dead. All time is ancestral time. We stand atop Mothers and Fathers without end. Waking up in the dark helps us to remember that great reality, and helps us to remain connected to it once we do.
