After hearing the complaint, Enlil proposes that one of the lesser gods will be executed as an example to the others. However, Enki, god of wisdom, proposes a better solution. He will take the blood of the slaughtered god and mix it with wet clay to create mankind. The flesh of the dead god will beat in the breast of mankind to provide him with his life-giving spirit, and mankind will then serve the gods and relieve them of their work. This plan seemed good to the gods, but unfortunately, as mankind grew in numbers, he made so much noise that the sleep of Enlil was disturbed. Enlil made several attempts to destroy humanity (the final attempt being the Great Flood). However, each attempt was thwarted when Enki revealed a way of escape to a devout worshipper. In this version of the epic, the Flood Hero is named Extra-wise (Atrahasis) because of his wisdom in building the Ark according to Enki’s instructions.
